This is it – the extraordinary, extra-sized finale of Scott Snyder and Jim Lee’s Superman saga, surrounded by an epic wraparound cover! It’s a battle in the sun as Superman and Wraith accept their destinies…and Lex Luthor pulls the trigger on his ultimate weapon!

Score 8 out of 10

While I loved this ending, it was a little more feel good, a little less final battle but over all really liked it. After Luthor has made a weapon capable of destroying the oncoming alien invasion, Superman has to decide if he is willing to use it because there’s a catch, Superman will explode.  Well Big Blue is fine sacrificing himself if it means saving the world but someone unexpected (ok, not that unexpected) shows up, but who’s side is the incomer on? C’mon, read it and find out!

Good:

Can’t say this enough, I love, love Jim Lee’s art! Crisp and clean and all around fantastic, also great coloring by Scott Williams (colorists don’t get nearly enough recognition in this business). I liked the insight into Superman’s past and the critique by Lex on who Superman is (albeit, he hates Superman but the reader is smart enough to see that Superman is great and the writer is using Lex to compliment Superman in a backhanded way). We see Superman as we are, a man (he’s also representing you ladies too) who is trying to do the right thing, figure out whats right and wrong, figuring out Truth, and doing his best to help.

Bad:

Other than the delays for the final issue (let’s let it go cause this great series is over now. It’s ok to cry a little bit.) the only complaint I have is that there wasn’t much action (about 4 pages of it).  I think they could have taken away some of the, “Oh look! Our technology isn’t working!” And instead had a little more action for the last issue.  Don’t get me wrong, I like the stories that give us a glimpse into a hero’s soul and inspires us but I want both.  Also, not a huge deal but Superman seemed a little too quick to just up and kill a huge armada of invading sentient aliens (I think he made the right call, there’s no real great way out of this if they are all as strong as Wraith, but there didn’t seem to be enough thought and angst over it).

Other Thoughts:

Sad to see it go! This was by far the best Superman series since the start of the New 52! The others are great as well but this was over the top fantastic! If you haven’t read the issues, the Trade Paper Back is coming out in December. Worth the money!

A round of applause to Scott Snyder and Jim Lee!
